Pyro Spectaculars by Souza as Special Design Consultants for the Closing Gala of the G20 Summit in Hangzhou, China
Melrose Pyrotechnics and Pyro Spectaculars by Souza are proud to announce our contribution as special design consultants for the G20 Closing Gala in Hangzhou, China on September 4th, 2016.
Partnering with our colleagues from Lidu Fireworks Group, we provided creative design support and concept implementation for this world class display. Directed by Zhang Yimou (2008 Beijing Olympics opening and closing ceremonies), the closing gala included an astonishing performance that takes place right on the surface of the water, combining live music, dance, and light effects all against a natural backdrop. Dancers, singers, children’s choirs, and an orchestra performed on a special stage that was built beneath the surface of the majestic West Lake. Through a remarkable feat of engineering, the platform lies centimeters below the water surface, so it seems the actors are defying the laws physics.
The fireworks portion alone required up to eighty technicians on site, six rehearsals leading up to the Gala, and more than six months of preparation. Over fourteen thousand aerial fireworks were utilized in the display.
The G20 summit, held between September 4 and 5 in Hangzhou, sees governments and representatives from 20 major economic powers meet and discuss strategies for fiscal policy and international financial stability.
The 2016 G20 summit was the 11th of its kind. It is the first time that China, Asia’s largest economic power, has held the summit.
